The Centering Pregnancy program is a new form of prenatal
care, where prenatal assessment, education and peer support
are provided in a group setting to mothers-to-be and their
support partners. Now gaining popularity throughout the United
States, Centering Pregnancy has been a popular addition to
prenatal services at Rumford Hospital for the past four years.
Instead of meeting with a prenatal care provider for a brief
visit individually, pregnant women and their support people
meet with the midwife or physician in a small group in a comfortable
setting for extended group sessions. The program provides
the same level of prenatal care provided in the traditional
office setting, and allows additional time for education about
pregnancy related issues, with sharing among participants
encouraged.
The Centering Pregnancy Program brings together families,
health care providers, and Special Delivery Staff, building
a foundation for continuing good health beyond the time of
pregnancy. Long term friendships often develop during Centering,
and Centering parents frequently return to the program during
subsequent pregnancies.
